What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often, and how well, AI assistants mention your brand when people ask questions in your category. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and asks three things: does the engine name you, does it link to you as a source, and does it describe you correctly.
What do the terms mean?
AI visibility
How often and how well AI assistants mention, cite and describe your brand for questions in your category.
Mention
The engine names your brand in its answer.
Citation
The engine links to your site, or a page about you, as a source for its answer.
Share of answer
Your share of all brand mentions across a set of buyer prompts, compared with competitors.
GEO
Generative engine optimization. The work of improving how generative AI engines mention and cite a brand.
AEO
Answer engine optimization. Shaping content so engines can lift a clear, direct answer from it.
Why does AI visibility matter for brands?
More buyers now ask an assistant what to buy instead of scrolling through a page of links. The assistant usually names a handful of brands and moves on. If you are not one of them, you are not in the running for that buyer, however well your pages rank.
The answer is shaped by more than your own site. Engines lean on review sites, best-of lists, forums, marketplaces and press. So a brand can rank well on Google and still be missing, or described wrongly, in AI answers.
How is AI visibility different from SEO, GEO and AEO?
| SEO | AI visibility (GEO / AEO) | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your pages in a list of links | Get named, cited and described correctly inside the answer |
| Where buyers see you | Search results pages | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews |
| What shapes it | Your pages, links, technical health | Your site plus third-party sources the engines trust |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Mention rate, citation rate, share of answer, accuracy |
| How they relate | A solid base for both | Builds on SEO, but good rankings alone do not guarantee a mention |
How do you measure AI visibility?
Pick the buyer prompts
List the questions real buyers ask in your category and market, in the languages they use.
Run them across engines
Ask each engine the same prompts and save the answers.
Score each answer
Mentioned or not, cited or not, position in the answer, and whether the facts are right.
Compare and repeat
Set the scores against competitors, then re-run on a schedule to see what moves.
How can a brand improve its AI visibility?
Make your site easy to read
Clear pages that answer buyer questions directly, with structured data so engines can understand your products and brand.
Show up where engines look
Get accurate coverage on the review sites, lists, forums and press the engines trust in your category.
Fix what AI gets wrong
Correct outdated or wrong information at the source, so answers describe you accurately.

Common questions
What is AI visibility?
It is how often, and how well, AI assistants mention your brand when people ask questions in your category. It covers whether the engine names you, links to you as a source, and describes you correctly.
Is AI visibility the same as GEO?
They are close. GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of improving how AI engines mention and cite you. AI visibility is the result you measure.
Does good SEO mean good AI visibility?
Not on its own. A solid site helps both, but AI engines also lean on third-party sources like review sites, best-of lists, forums and press. Good rankings alone do not guarantee a mention.
Which AI engines matter most?
It depends on where your buyers ask. We track ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews by default, and add Copilot or Claude if your buyers use them.
How long does it take to improve?
Engines that search the web live, like Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, can pick up changes within weeks. Answers that rely on what a model learned in training move slower, often over months.
