GEO (generative engine optimization) for brands in Africa
GEO (generative engine optimization) in Africa means making sure ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name your brand when buyers in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Egypt ask what to buy, in English and, in Egypt, in Arabic. RemoteCMO is an AI visibility and GEO consultancy led by Ankit Gupta, who worked across 12 African markets at Jumia. We serve brands in Africa remotely, measure each country on its own, and fix the gaps.
Why does Africa need a market-by-market approach?
Ankit Gupta worked across 12 African markets at Jumia. That is the starting point for this work: what sells in Lagos does not automatically sell in Nairobi, Johannesburg or Cairo, and the sources buyers trust are different in each.
AI search follows the same pattern. The brands ChatGPT names for a question in Nigeria can be different from the ones it names in Kenya, because the engines read different marketplaces, media and forums in each country. So we never treat Africa as one market.

How do buyers in Africa use AI assistants?
ChatGPT is the main AI assistant across these markets, but the runner-up varies. In September 2026 Google Gemini had about 21% of AI chatbot referral traffic in Kenya and Egypt, and about 14% in Nigeria, while in South Africa Microsoft Copilot (about 6%) sat close behind Gemini (about 9%), according to Statcounter (Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa).
Buyers ask in English in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, often with local terms mixed in, and in Arabic in Egypt. Many shop through marketplaces and pay by mobile money or on delivery, and those details show up in the questions they ask AI.
Statcounter figures are shares of AI chatbot referral traffic for September 2026, not counts of users.
